A long time ago, grassy mats, animal hides, even the ground were all common surfaces on which to practice yoga. Then, more than sixty years ago, the sticky mat was born. Varying thicknesses, materials, and longevity are hallmarks of today’s mats. However, the aim is the same, regardless of the mat: provide a surface that’s comfortable and stable.

These mats normally are slippery when moist, however, so they’re not the best option if there’s a lot of perspiration. Additionally, these sticky mats are made of dangerous chemicals. A second type of mat common to yogis are ones made of rubber created in nature. These, too, come in varying thicknesses, but they give more traction than sticky mats. These are also more friendly to you and the environment. Natural rubber is sustainable and has no toxins. There are two major drawbacks, however, for many who try this, one of which is the smell is unpleasant. True, it’s just a very strong rubber smell, but some people cannot tolerate this. The second issue is that this mat is not inexpensive.

Some people are have rubber allergies, so alternative mats have to be considered. Mats made of man-made rubber don’t harm the environment. It’s a relatively new material and they don’t have that rubber smell that can be offensive to many. Though they are just as durable and comfortable as natural rubber mats, these are less expensive.

Cotton or hemp yoga mats are also available. The traditional yoga rug, known as the Ashtanga, is crafted of fibers woven so well that perspiration is absorbed easily. These rugs provide excellent foot traction. On the other hand, the mats often slip on the floor. As such, many yoga veterans place these rugs on top of sticky mats, or they just buy natural material mats that have rubber layered on the underside.

Another natural fiber mat is one made of jute fibers. These are woven together with a natural resin that results in a non-skid yet comfortable mat. They are thin and this renders less its cushioning and comfort. As well, the jute fibers are not so durable, as they usually wear out more quickly than other types of mats. And, because of this, it is suggested that they be hand-washed, even though they can be washed by machine.

Lastly, there are the so-called travel mats. Thin and lightweight, they can pack easily and be transported easily. Though inexpensive, cushioning is almost non-existent, so these are not common for everyday use.
